Hpe®_FuSE – Hardware Fault Injection using SEmulation

FuSE is a VHDL fault injection tool that uses the SEmulator® engine, a hardware accelerator for VHDL simulations. In this way FuSE combines the high visibility of internal sequences with the improved performance originated from the hardware acceleration. FuSE allows to automatically inserting various
faults into an existing design just by defining the fault type, location and activation parameters. The usage of VHDL as description language adds much flexibility to the whole fault injection process that can either be executed on an FPGA or run within a simulator. Furthermore, the SEmulator® concept allows combining these two possibilities which results in the degree of detail known from simulations but executed at much higher speed.

The basic principle of FuSE is to observe the device under test (DUT) and to record this observation into a file/database. This data can be processed offline by a powerful workstation. Depending on the specific usage either a single run is sufficient to judge the impact of a fault -- this is the case where a TMR system is analyzed or golden node approach is applied -- or more consecutive runs are required -- a golden (fault free) run which serves as a reference and subsequent runs where faults are injected. In all cases FuSE applies the same basic procedure: Depending on the configuration, it injects fault or not and records the selected data. To allow a more accurate evaluation, each data record (observed bits within a time unit) can be tagged with a timestamp which in the case of an error refers
to the fault that was injected during the experiment. This information can then be used in the analysis mode to replicate the exact point in time (i.e. recreate the internal state of the DUT) when the fault was injected but with the benefit of a detailed observation of the impact.
